I was very impressed with both these dwarf cultivars of platanoides. Unfortunatly, i cant hardly find any information about them, nor can i find any of them for sale. I googled both and did find a little on the 'curly lamp post' Any additional information or pictures anyone can provide would be great! Thanks
Yes, I have seen only once Acer platanoides 'rezek' Does anyone know where I can acquire one of these beautiful maples.
Daniel, I don't see 'Rezek' in either the paper or web catalogue... did I just miss it? I had noticed 'Curly Lamppost' in both, but it is listed as A. pseudoplatanus. There is no link to further information at Esveld, and it is listed as only incidentally available, so I'm guessing that they have a stock plant which hasn't yet been propagated. If the plant is a hybrid of saccharum X platanoides I think Terrapin is wrong to list it as they do: they seem to contradict themselves. You could certainly email to Esveld and see what justification they have for the name, and also inquire the source of their plant.
Ah, I see. This is the collection, not plants offered for sale (where I was looking). I guess they have no plans to propagate it, as it doesn't show in the catalogue.
Hi, I'll have to chime in here after reading this post. I am interested, where did you get it? Also, I notice you're in zone 5 as I am. Do you have it in a pot or ground? Is it growing well? How long have you had it? Hope that's not too many questions, but I was really surprised to see this post. I sort of gave up on ever finding it. KD
It took me about 1 year to get but, Broken Arrow Nursery has it. It's not listed in there catalogue. Ask for Adam. He is the nursery manager/chief plant propagator. Mine is doing fine it was a 2 yr graft. Its been in the ground since April or so of this year. It looks like it has grown about 6 inches or so. I'm certian that, that will slow down in the coming years. I know of 3 people that have in the New England area. Two of them are 3' tall and about 12 - 15 years of age. The other one is about 5' tall and skinnier, I don't if he is taking wood from it to graph but, I don't think so. It is in the ground an in full sun. Hope that helps you out.
THanks, that helps a lot. I have been in contact with them about ordering in the fall. I will email him. Kay Dye
I know this is a very old post but I have some interesting information to add to it. I met Randy Dyskstra at the Conifer Society convention last summer. He knew Ed Rezek and evidently there was a platanoides in the Ed's neighborhood that produced the curly leafed seedlings on occasion. The photo gallery shows a nice set of images of the type. http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=9525 It turns out that Randy found a platanoides somewhere near his home that also produces this form of seedling. In the spring he collects them and pots them up. I picked a 'yearling' up today. He showed me the ones growing in his yard. Some less than two feet tall after 8-10 years and some quite a bit larger. Strange plant for certain Keith
Keith, I was at the ACS meeting last summer and was fortunate enough to be the winning bidder on the curly leafed seedling that was in the live auction that I think came from this source. It looked like a dwarf and had very curly leaves. The seedling is only about three inches tall and I did not get any photos before winter. I will try to remember to post some in the spring. Ed
Ed, Yes, that would have been one of Randy's seedlings. Wish I'd known you were there. I really have enjoyed seeing your maple pictures. Makes me wish I lived 'East' so I could come for your open house. Too many miles and too many kids to be feasible right now. Keith
kzmanfive, I'm wondering if you still have your 'curly lamp post' from four years ago. I just got one yesterday and it is gorgeous. I wasn't going to put it into the ground, but after rereading the info on the forum, I might rethink that. What do you think? I'm in your zone. You have more snow cover, I'm sure. Kay
