Acer palmatum 'Waka-momiji' This Acer was planted in April 2002. It was bought from the Plant Centre at Westonbirt. The National Arboretum. Tetbury, Gloucestershire. GL8 8QS. Vertrees , 2nd edition,says.... In all characteristics it is identical to "Sango kaku". Van Gelderen, 1999 edition, says.... not unlike A.p."Sango kaku", but Waka- momiji is more strongly growing. This one certainly has the coral red twigs, like "Sango kaku"
Re: Acer palmatum 'Waka-momiji' This is very interesting as the World Maple Checklist, that was created and published by Peter Gregory and Hugh Angus at Westonbirt, states that 'Waka-momiji' and 'Waka-momiji Variegated' are the same plant, although the latter has an illegitimate due to the mixing of languages within it's name. Here is a 'Waka-momiji Variegated' that I recently bought that lives up the variegated portion of it's name. It appears to be a totally different plant, almost in the Versicolor group. Re: Acer palmatum 'Waka-momiji' According to Maples for Gardens the variegated one was a bud sport of the other one that looked similar to 'Sango kaku'. The older edition of Vertrees also had entries for both forms. Now that 'Waka momiji Variegated' is being called simply 'Waka momiji', what should people call the original? P.S. no problem Alex
