I'm really happy with this maple i picked up yesterday, its 8 years old and was a seedling that was selected by Barthelemys. I just love the colour and its habit. It goes to show that sometimes there are some surprises to be had.
That is nice...I'm prefering the green more these days especially as all the named reds end up as a dark shadow in my garden
Lovely! The reticulation is very nice - hopefully it stays that way. :) Reminds me a bit of my Shigi no hoshi.
The nursery reckoned it was not distinct enough to name, I will have to check out Shigi no hoshi. I know it's very different to anything that I have in my collection so far.
I seem to have too many reds and like the lighter tones as a contrast, so am with you on preferring the greens at the moment. How ever I just picked up a Jerre Schwartz as this one really stands out as something different.
Just done some research on Shigi No Hoshi and have seen the pictures you posted in the past, and am considering adding this to my collection, would you recomend it?
Ah yes I've seen Jerre Schwartz around, has odd shaped leaves but as you point out too many reds in my garden too,all the same colour.I pinned my hopes on Pixie a while back as it seems to colour up well stateside but it's not really any better than the others here.I'm trying out a couple of what I consider not true reds,ie green with a bit of shade...the 'Nathan' I've already mentioned and 'Masu Murasaki'...see if they look any brighter for me.
I would, yes, especially if you like the reticulated variegation. Since the summer sun is especially intense here in Kansas, with the exception of offering it sun for half a day in the spring, I keep it in bright shade (it's still in a pot, so I have the luxury of moving it around), like I do with Filigree. Speaking of which, if you don't have that one, check it out - it's my favorite green dissectum. Something interesting to note: I have only seen one other person post pictures of Shigi no hoshi (on a different maple forum), and theirs too had a very similar habit to mine - very broad for the size of the tree (ie, as broad as tall). I'll try to post some updated pictures of it.
Hi Maplesandpaws, that's for posting the pictures which I have just checked out. I need to see if I can find one for sale in the UK. I have filigree and agree its one of the best green dissectums. Houzi, I bought Pixie last winter after having admired it in leaf last year, it's holding it's colour well, has a very nice growth habit and I'm very pleased with it. I have Masu Murasaki, need to try and post some pictures.
Jaybee, don't get me wrong ha ha,Pixie's a nice tree and along with Skeeters, holds it's spring colour the longest of the reds in my garden, but it does darken to match the rest later. What d'ya reckon on Masumurasaki?..mines just started to turn red now.
Hi Houzi, Took some pictures of my Masu Murasaki today, Have had this since it was a 1 year graft, its done well and no problems.
Thanks JB for uploading pics....good to know it's been reliable, yours looks fine&healthy.Vertrees calls it intensely red though that might be in a different climate,so I'm hoping this won't go as dark as my others. I have to say,the brightest red in summer in my garden is 'Shaina'...not because the colour is any better than the others, but purely because it's literally covered in bright red new leaves until way into summer.
