Like Ueno Yama, Ueno Homare is a bright yellow addition to the spring garden. It's leaves are almost identical to Ueno Yama's except (as Vertrees notes) they are smaller at 5 cm., even though my Ueno Homare is five times the size of my Ueno Yama. Both provide bright true yellow spring colors, especially against a backdrop of dark-colored rhodies, mugos and conifers. I cannot understand why this cultivar isn't more popular because it's a real star.
A nice example at Westonbirt Arboretum, late April 2009, one of the best for spring colour and looks good in an open woodland setting. It would be interesting to compare it side by side with 'Katsura'.
I'd love to have one to put near both a Katsura and a Ueno Yama (I have the latter two) and be able to compare them.
I haven't been able to find one to buy. Is it hard to cultivate? You'd think with the colors it offers and the small leaves it would be a good bonsai candidate.
Any more updates/pictures of this one from this year please? Looks lovely! How long does it hold it's yellow tones into summer?
