I had read somewhere that it was supposedly the same tree as 'Azuma murasaki' - though the 4 ed. now states them as different.

My old boss was named Toshi and collected a few Japanese maples. When I stopped working for him I got him one as a going-away gift - but I couldn't find any trees named 'Toshi' so I gave him an 'Azuma murasaki'. Interesting to see one labelled as Toshi!

Looking at my Toshi and my Azuma murasaki, I would say there is a huge difference in growing habit. The Azuma has more red leaves and has more dence growth which makes it more of a ball shape.

Here is a spring color difference between Toshi and Azuma murasaki. Between the two the color of the Azuma murasaki is a more attractive red.

Interesting, the same name used for two different cultivars.

Now if we found photos from Japan we might find out more. Then again maybe two trees just ended up with the same name.
