Ok, I know near nothing about this tree but I do like its open type growing habit. It is in semi sun and has a nice red green coloring. It is about 5' tall. Here is more info on the tree http://www.buchholznursery.com/plant_page.html?id=26c74a
I had read somewhere that it was supposedly the same tree as 'Azuma murasaki' - though the 4 ed. now states them as different. My old boss was named Toshi and collected a few Japanese maples. When I stopped working for him I got him one as a going-away gift - but I couldn't find any trees named 'Toshi' so I gave him an 'Azuma murasaki'. Interesting to see one labelled as Toshi!
Looking at my Toshi and my Azuma murasaki, I would say there is a huge difference in growing habit. The Azuma has more red leaves and has more dence growth which makes it more of a ball shape.
Here is a spring color difference between Toshi and Azuma murasaki. Between the two the color of the Azuma murasaki is a more attractive red.
Now if we found photos from Japan we might find out more. Then again maybe two trees just ended up with the same name.
