Question: I've just purchased a "Red Select". I am trying to place it in a good location, but the tag information is confusing me. The tag in one spot says to put it in full sun, and in another location, partial shade. The plan was to put it next to my pond, in full sun, but I don't want to cook it. I have a couple shady spots I can put it, but am concerned that it won't get enough warms in the winter, and as I'm on the northern limits of this plant (zone 4b) I don't want it to freeze, and as I've learned with my Hardy cactus beds, you can push those zones some, as long as the winter beds get the sun.
    Thanks for any help,
    Chris

mindful that my climate ranges from 20 to 105F (last week had 3 days of around 100),
my 2 Red Selects are green in shade (or little sun) and much more red in sun but even
in filtered sun it has green highlights as well. many years into collecting maples, I still
find exact location and microclimates are so determinative of leaf color. i grow most of
my trees in pots so I can move them around because I am interested in finding where
the tree (rather than me) likes it because I will be so much more richly rewarded.
I hope you enjoy your tree wherever you put it.
