David, No I have not had any leaf burn at all on this plant so far. However, I must add that it's surrounded by ancient tall fruit trees and a monstrous sycamore, so all this tree gets is occasional noon-time sizzling light. It probably only receives 2-3 hours of direct sunlight each day, and the rest of the time it gets rather subtle filtered light. It's also growing like crazy and seems to like it's place in the garden. Frankly, I try to plant my more delicate dissectums in rather shady areas because there is a real tipping point to how much sun dissectums can handle well. Consequently Red Filigree Lace, 2 Toyama Nishikis, Beni Shidare, Goshiki Shidare, Hana Matoi, Lemon Chiffon, and many others receive only a very few hours of direct sunlight in my garden, and I've had exceptionally good color from them with no leaf burn whatsoever.

Newly emerged leaf, picture taken 5th of April 2009. I am always amazed by the strength of the leaves given their thin shape; they hardly look able to support their own weight, let alone a friendly visitor.

I like red filigree lace but i do see some minor issues with the tree. I have found it to little more dieback than I would expect. its growth pattern is a little trick because of this, the tree can end up with bald spots. For me i prune it a little more to keep it more tighter in shape.

Bought this yesterday passing a non-specialist nursery,he'd just had 3of them in.
Labelled as RFL,I have my doubts.Though the leaves are finely dissected, the photos belie this as they are infact only5cmx5cm.These tiny leaves make me think it's not RFL.Also I'd say the branching and buds are as sturdy as the average dissectum, making it easy to graft.
Anyway it caught my eye having nice red at this time of year and looks like a dissectum in miniature,....any ideas as to what it is?..greatly appreciated:)

Sorry my learned friends.I've thought about this and realised it's an impossible question.Sure it'd be nice to hear that it looks like Red Crochet,Beni Hill or whatever, but it'd be just that.....ie 'looks like'.I have to put it down as 'unknown' as although mistakes can be made,I think if you're buying or selling a cultivar, you will sell it or receive it and sell it on as that cultivar.....makes sense.More likely someone noticed it to be more lacey than usual and the first name springs to mind is RFL,which clearly it's not.I think it's highly unlikely someone was propagating one of the similar cultivars but put RFL on by mistake....sorry it's just the sceptic in me:)

Houzi, those leaves look the same size as the ones on mine which I think is true to type. Vertrees says leaves measure 6-8 cm long and 7-9 cm wide, which looks about what yours would be if the lobes were spread out. I'd wait till next spring before totally ruling out a correct labelling.

The growth does look quite vigorous, but might just be the result of heavy feeding at the nursery.

The trunk looks the wrong colour, mine is not green, but that could be explained by a high graft.

That's nice to hear Maf,though I must admit,Lois&Mapleman's leaves look very 'spidery',perhaps if they're larger would make them appear so,leading me to believe this is different to theirs. However others here do look similar to mine.
Anyway....I loved it as soon as I saw it,grabbed it and made an on the spot impulse purchase...most unlike me ha.Just for comparison it's shown here with Tamukeyama,Garnet&Ornatum....oh yes It's Hi-grafted at about a foot and has some pretty thick branches.
I know you like yours and can see why now:)

The Red Filigree Lace I just bought from Green Acres last week has the same typical leaf as your picture. I also have the Green filigree bought back since 2007. Comparing between the two, I must admit that the leaf of the red one is finer than the green one's, but I love both of them. Oh maples, maples, maples, they're so elegant and delicate. what more should I say? Thanks for the pictures.

No need to say any more,we know :).....nice to seeya here, feel free to post pics.anytime...big or small we all like to share our addiction.
Yes the green Filigree makes no claims to be ultra finely dissected but is many peoples favourite because of the neat shaped leaves and very subtle variegation giving it a lighter look than usual.

This is the first year our 'Red Filigree Lace' had flowers. It's our seventh season with this very special variety.
