This is a purple linearilobum. It has been in the ground for 3 years and seems to be slower growing that Enkan or Red Pygmy. I do not know who or when this cultivar was introduced but, with such a name, I suspect it comes from down under. My plant was propagated by Esveld. The pics show the leaves Spring, Summer and Fall. hard to tell from the two other cultivars mentioned. Gomero
Re: Acer palmatum 'Pung Kill' I checked the Esveld site and Vertrees for more info about this unusual name - no such luck! Here is the only thing I could find from Vertrees (3rd edition, page 294): 'Pung Kil' "This Korean cultivar is similar to 'Red Pygmy' but with longer, narrower straplike lobes. The young leaves are light red, becoming dark red for the summer and holding their color well. 'Pung kil' originated from the seedling Acer palmatum f. atropurpureum. The name has been mispelled 'Pung Kill'. "
Re: Acer palmatum 'Pung Kill' Pung Kil is quite a bit different than Red Pygmy. I find it to be more in growing habit to Beni Otake. The color is on the one I have is very dark, possible one of the darkest leaves off any of my maples. I will try to get a photo of it but i can not say i am excited about the looks of the tree i own.
I've seen this at our local New Season's Grocery, grown by Bucholz. It is a dark, glossy red with green, and honestly looks nothing like the red pygmy that I have.
Pung kil is quickly becoming one of my favorite linearilobums. For me it is faster growing and sturdier than Aekan ies and Enkan, and it holds its color almost as long. Mine has a deeper purple pigmentation than Red cloud, Beni otake and Atrolineare...perhaps not quite as deep as Aekan ies or Enkan. It actually reminds me of Hubb's red willow, but with less of the little notching along the lobes; and it seems to hold its color better.
Is Pung Kil considered a medium-vigorous grower . In my initial reads, it was a slow grower. I just got mine in the mail. Good side, but the leader was topped at about 4' with strong branching past that. Wish it was a single leader..... I dug up a pic from the same nursery they sent me this spring......the pics appears to be a smaller plant, but it wasn't topped. Not that I expected to received the one in the pic that was 6 months ago. Going to have to do some subrogation pruning next year or just leave it alone
