This is my latest addition, just beginning to leaf out. It is an unusual brownish colour. I think I am going to like it
I've had this plant for two years and marvel at its pendulous habit. It's robust and growing significantly each year.
Pendulum Julian is an interesting year-round dissectum, but here it is on October 17, 2007, just beginning to turn orange-red for the autumn. It's stunning, with the fall colors beginning at the tips and working back to take over the rest of the tree. While I wouldn't call this cultivar rampant, it has grown robustly and has gained 50% in height and width in 2 years.
Spring leaves from my new Pendulum Julian. The bright yellow-green twigs and branches really contrast nicely with the red leaves. Kevin in KC
Here is my tree that is about 30 years old. It spent most of its life as a stock plant and grown in a container. This is a old variety that is often overlooked in today's market. The natural form is beautiful and requires no training and it just keeps getting better with age. The color is constantly changing throughout the growing season. Stop chasing new varieties and do yourself a favor and add Pendulum Julian to your garden! It stands up to full sun and survived 72 hours at -25F and several weeks of temps below 0F. Get it for the form and constant color changes, winter intrest, but don't get it for its ability to hold its color because you be surprised when it keeps changing. For a variety that holds its color well go for Tamukeyama in sun or Acer palmatum 'Red Filigree Lace' for shade. Our second tree in the front is half as old and is on a much taller curvy under-stock. The roots are not as shaded so it produces seed due to the dryer soil and heat from the stone in full sun. New seeds are chartreuse and turn more yellow than green with age and develop more pink on the wing.
This is a fabulous plant and is one of my favourites now after 12 years or so with me. The changing colours are very satisfying. In this pic it is the tree behind the Rheum (the large 'rhubarb' type plant
Nice looking tree there Sam in a lovely looking setting i may add. My favourite dissectum, have one or two of these fellas :) here's just a couple of them today with the beautiful burgundy colours showing at the moment.Even when they are out of leaf they have a interesting branch structure to look at.
