For a couple of years, garden centers in France have been selling young maples under the same "brand name". There are about 5 different cultivars available, among which 'Phoenix', 'Atropurpureum', 'Katsura', and also a variegated one, 'Taylor' or 'Butterfly', I can't remember. I recently bought one labeled 'Little Princess' but I've found very little information on this one. I read it's another name for Acer palmatum 'Mapi-no-machihime', but I couldn't find anything on this forum either. When I bought it, the leaves were green like a plain palmatum, but apparently the new leaves in the spring are red tinged on the outside. Has anyone photos of the spring foliage ?...
Probably just yet another example of garden centres and others manufacturing names in order to sell more plants to unsuspecting collectors ......
The "World Checklist" (Westonbirt) and "Pocket Guide" (Vertrees/Gregory) both list Little Princess as a synonymous with Mapi-no-machi hime. There is a picture in the PG. "light yellow-green edged with pink-orange" in the spring. "darker bronze edge sometimes persists through the summer." "fall color is orange-red." size to 2m high and wide. (Dwarf group.) HTH, -E
