At first I thought I'd lost my small, potted Acer palmatum 'Ichigyoji' to the harsh winter, but now there is some new growth above the grafting point. The leaves that are emerging are red with green veins. I bought this maple last summer, so I've never seen it leaf out. Can anyone tell me if this is the typical spring foliage for 'Ichigyoji'?

From what I can remember I would say not typical, I would expect green leaves. Mine is always the slowest of my JM's to leaf out in the spring. If it has been stressed or injured by the winter maybe that is the cause of non-typical colors.

Thanks, maf. I was surprised to see these red leaves myself. I'll wait and see what happens next.
