I do hope you are going to keep an established maple garden in retirement Sam. The photo of your Hana matoi with the surrounding garden is wonderful.

Goldy, please email me at eastforknursery@outlook.com as this forum is not supposed to be for advertising/marketing, but rather photos of maples. Thanks, Sam

The forums have a conversation feature you can use instead of having your email public, or to keep threads on topic. You can get there either by clicking on a user's profile and select Start a conversation, or by clicking the envelop, start a conversation, and entering the user name.

Hey Sam, I'll send you an email, if you have a list of what you have? I would make the drive up again and pick up some trees.

20th October 2023 and in dwindling late afternoon/ early evening, light with lots of rain, my Hana matoi is glowing.

How do I stop getting emails about this old thread? I wasn't even able to buy any trees after I was told I could.

You can either click the Unwatch Thread link at the upper right of this page: upload_2024-4-18_8-33-35.png ,
or you can resist the urge to come to this thread from the notice. Once you skip acting on a notice, you become unsubscribed to that thread.
It used to be that way. If you keep getting notices when you are not looking at the thread, you can report that at Forum Announcements and Feedback | UBC Botanical Garden Forums.

21st April 2024 and my Hana Matoi, which I lifted last year as it wasn't too happy in its position, is now in a bonsai training pot. Not sure if it will stay there, time will tell.

What do you guys suggest on -training - up Hana Matoi. Straight leader and then let it weep when at 4 feet height ?
Or same:similar 4ft height but encourage 2 or 3 slight bends or S into it for interest.

It depends on where it's to be positioned. I have my Emerald Lace on a straight leader as I want it to cover some fencing. But tbh the dissectums do look better as a mound forming tree IMO.
So my answer is 'Whatever you want', as there is no hard or fast rule.

Yeah, I know it's subjective. Wasn't planning on some huge sweeping bends. Just considered it for some winter interest.

Agree it is fun to shape them into something you want to try.
So looking at your post #165, a straight high leader for Hana Matoi will take quite a long time to get into a shape you want. Hence why I mentioned my Emerald Lace. Now this cultivar is a beast.... It will take over if not controlled, but to train into a shape you want, it's ideal.
I feel that Hana Matoi is a more delicate dissectum that looks nicer lower to the ground in a lovely natural mound appearance.
I hope you find what you're looking for in this maple project. Whatever you do it will be fun.
