A new one for the forum and for me. This is a very slender linearilobum type maple, that is close to Fairy hair. I will post a few this year to update. Here it is this morning 9th April 2022.
Fenna's colour is mellowing a bit, moving towards gentle orange instead of the eyecatching pink when it first emerged:
12th May 2022 and some strange looking leaves on my Fenna this morning. Will be inertesting to see this develop over the Summer.
I got this from Stephen Rolph online N. Not sure if he has anymore, but worth contacting him. Oaktree nurseries EBay.
Thanks, I'd seen his eBay page but that one isn't listed, I'll have to get in touch. Edit He'll know in August if any more are coming in, so I'll call back then.
So mine arrived with a lot of sort of mottling/aging on the bark, all over besides one small strip of green along the underside of one branch. It almost looks like desiccation if it wasn't for the fact the buds all look plump and healthy for next yet. I'm unfamiliar with this cultivar so not sure if it's just a trait this one has? I emailed Stephen for clarification but he hasn't checked his other stock and replied yet. It looks like some of yours may be the same but it's hard to see clearly.
Early days for mine aswell C. Do keep an eye on it and if it gets worse over the Winter I would contact Stephen and ask for a replacement.
Hi Catwooduk, If you enlarge the photos posted by XiFeng (open in a new window), you'll notice that it's got " of sort of mottling/aging on the bark " too...
@Cattwooduk Hi C. Just took this photo of my youngster. It's pouring down here ATM so a bit wet I'm afraid, but it shows the bark on this cultivar is definitely mottled. Hope that puts your mind at rest a little.
I often read messages from people worrying about the bark of a maple turning grey or mottled, whereas on the one(s) they had before it stayed green much longer. I think a lot of "dissectums" do that. As long as the buds look healthy and no branches are dying, I think it's nothing to worry about.
Always a concern when buying a young graft online. They don't always come to you looking 100%.. So I understand C @Cattwooduk concerns. This is a very useful forum to get another's view.
It was more to check this cultivar as it's new to me. I have had others before with this sort appearance so I just wanted to check with people here to see if it was usual. I've got a Firecracker which has lots of branches with this kind of mottling effect and I know that it is not normal for that variety but still has lots of healthy looking buds.
