A newer cultivar, but listed in Appendix C of the Vertrees 3rd edition. While described as a 'Red' variety of the matsumarae group, it has very strong green undertones. The rusty color of the leaves is very pleasant. Having the luck to see a mature specimen of this tree, it will form a pretty sturdy shub-like tree typical of the matusmarae group. After 15 years, the tree stood about 10-12ft by nearly as wide.
Here is a new photograph of the summer growth on my plant. What makes it exciting is that the entire first set of leaves was cooked off the plant. These are the first to rise from the new bud set. This photo was taken in early morning sunlight.
The 1st three photos are from this spring and the forth is from the late spring last year to give some meaning to the description given in the initial thread post. This tree is not very large, only a couple of years old, and if I have the opportunity, I will shoot some photos of a large specimen that I know of to give some impression of what an attractive specimen this tree can make.
I planted mine late in 2018 and it sailed through the winter and has done so well this season. As with many maples it shows a great range of colour through the year. I have attached pictures showing 3 completely different colours of its foliage (May, June and then October)
My first posting of my Acer palmatum 'Edna Bergman . A strong green leaf that can get lost amongst the brighter varieties, but it is Autumn when this cultivar comes alive, as with all the greens.
22nd March 2021 and very early this morning my Edna Bergman was looking like it is going to leaf out very soon now. The forecast is good for the next two weeks with no frost so it's looking good.
26th March 2021 and the rain overnight has made the bids glow this morning. This cultivar is wonderful all year round. Definatly a 4 season tree.
12th April 2021 and my Edna Bergman is well under way now. I'm hoping this photo diary is helping some who have asked about it.
28th April 2021 and my Edna Bergman in the early morning sun is why I bought this one. What better to look at whilst walking around the garden on a Spring day.
1st May 2021 and I'm really pleased that I've had a few PM's about this one. So as promised here it is on a bright but very cold Mayday.
20th May 2021 and the leaves have opened. I do enjoy the colours on my Edna Bergman at all times of the year. Not a common cultivar in collections, but I enjoy it very much.
3rd June 2021 and I wanted to show my Edna Bergman just coming back, after being hit hard by all the April frosts.
28th June 2021 and an update on my Edna Bergman. Sadly it didn't make it. Those frosts were just too much for it. Not sure if I will get another as it has shown to be rather weak.
