Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' This linearilobum is the smallest of the strapleaf maples, and mine, located in a rather shaded area, produces subtle pastel colors all spring long. This photo was taken May 5, 2007, just as it was leaving the pastel mode. The summer color is a dark red.
Re: Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' I hope this will more clearly show what I mean. This photo was taken April 25, 2007. This tree in spring shows subtle colors of soft pink and soft green, nothing intense on it, but it has a great form and overall presence. The colors are soft, subtle and compelling, and I think this tree is often overlooked because it doesn't have the neon colors some others have. Still, I think it's an elegant and wonderful plant.
Re: Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' This cultivar lives under a canopy of madrones and therefore receives bright indirect light but few direct rays. This placement might be responsible for the fall color which was unlike anything else in my garden. Though this close-up photo makes the leaves look darker and more purple, the total effect in real life from a distance was an unusual terra cotta color in the fall.
Re: Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' Beni ubi gohon is one of my reddest Japanese maples. I've grown it in containers since I got it as a first year graft.
Re: Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' This is a great little linearilobum. It makes a nice filler type plant which can be tuck nest to dwarf evergreens
Re: Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon' So, the quality of this image is not ideal, but you can see the beautiful structure on this four foot tall example. Golly, I wanted it. But I can't figure out where to put all the ones I have.
Nice tree. Thanks for the link to Talon Buchholz's blog where he states the name should be 'Beni yubi gohon'. I have copied it here. 'Beni yubi gohon' is the same name it is listed under in the 4th edition of Vertrees. http://florawonder.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/skinny.html
YW BTW, I can't stop thinking about the one at Charlie's. It may have to come home with me the next time I visit. Hmm.
9th October 2020 and this is my new and rather small Acer palmatum 'Beni ubi gohon'. I have high hopes for this tree. My next posting on this cultivar will be in the Spring of 2021 and the following years.
It might be small, but I’ve seen specimens from Charlie’s videos and they look great when they are a bit bigger. Lots to look forward to.
24th October 2020 and my new little Beni ubi gohon has given some colour. As Luke said, "an enjoyable journey".
30th April 2021 and a new season starts with my new Beni ubi gohon. I'm looking forward to how this lovely cultivar turns out and I will be sure to photo diary it here.
25th May 2021 and it's taken a while for my Beni ubi gohon to leaf out, but now it has it's been with the wait.
8th June 2021 and I thought I would update the photo diary of my Beni ubi gohon this morning, as it is changing rapidly atm.
26th May 2022 and my Beni ubi gohon has more shades of colours this season, compared to previous years.
My first year with this one. Planted in fall 2021, it survived a winter after having 5ft of an ice avalanche fall on it, which bent it in half. I’m glad I didn’t give up on it, I love the thick linearilobum leaves.
19th April 2024 and my Beni ubi gohon is only just leafing out. I do love the delicate leaves on this cultivar.
