Every year I ignore this tree and leave it to its own devices, and every year it surprises me with just how pretty it can be:

The more you ignore the more they want to impress. Or so it seems Lol.

What a coincidence Romain, it's one of my wife's favourites along with Oridono nishiki.

10th May 2022 and I think Beni maiko is now at it's best. The green will come very soon now.

31st May 2022 and I hope my Beni maiko keeps this colour well into June. But for now it is very pleasing to the eye this morning.

I had a Beni Maiko years ago as one of my first few maples I bought but it got destroyed by the 'Beast from the East' along with a couple of others.

Every now and then I notice them again when shopping but haven't bought another because I had a Shin Deshojo, and decided they were too similar to warrant having both...
A few weeks ago I noticed the S.Deshojo had a black ring around the stem right by the graft so I binned in. In hindsight I should have just tried to air layer above the diseased area (face palm) but it was one of those impulse decisions I made not wanting to risk infected soil.

So... Now I've noticed a few beautiful Beni Maiko at a local garden centre for very good prices and I'm debating popping back over to get one! Will report back later!

I agree they are similar, but depending on position in a garden, they do colour up at different times, giving a longer rich pink season. I don't regret having both tbh.

13th April 2024 and the opposite side of my garden to my Shindeshojo is my Beni maiko. Important to keep these two apart to appreciate both.

27th April 2024 and although I posted a couple of weeks ago, the deep pinks on my Beni maiko were so vivid, I thought I would share.
