My Acer palmatum 'Autumn gold' is now 30 years old and it is a cultivar I have to keep in check with hard pruning in February followed by a Summer tidy. Even though it is a lot if work it is a mainstay in my garden, nothing stops it from growing. It is in full early morning sun and shade from around 5 pm. Three photos from leafing out in April to today 19th July 2020 in the rain.
29th July 2020 and my Autumn gold is still putting out lots of new growth. From a distance this tree is not a stand out by any means, but get up close as with most maples IMO, then the real beauty is there. Always the very last to leaf out in my garden and the last for an Autumn show. But what a show!!!!!
18th August 2020 and everything is colouring up along with new growth. Almost looks like Spring and Autumn at the same time in my garden. So strange, but a nice strange if you get my meaning. My Autumn gold is always the last to leaf out in my garden and the last to colour up in Autumn. But after a lot have dropped their leaves, this one is in full swing. As can be seen absolutly no effects from the extreme heat. Not a stand out cultivar compared to others, but a reliable one, year in year out.
August 29th 2020 and Autumn colours are very fast approaching. It even feels like we are in October today rather than August. 7° C at the moment. Been a while since my last posting as it was not doing much, but now you can see the changes starting. My Autumn gold is always the last to leaf out and the last to colour up in the Autum. But we'll worth waiting for.
Well its the beginning of September 2020 and the dew is appearing on the leaves. Together with the fast changing colours, it's that time of year of joy in the maple garden. Why has this one gone out of fashion !!!? An old cultivar but always looks elegant in my garden. But I do love the greens.
12th September 2020 and believe it or not, new growth is everywhere in my garden together with Autumn colours emerging. Temperatures of 31°C expected in a couple of days. My Autumn gold will be the very last to colour up in my garden. It will have leaves when everything else has dropped. When it does lose it's leaves, as far as I'm concerned its Winter, Lol.
The very last day of September 2020 and my Autumn gold is still looking like it's Summer best. But this cultivar is a very late to colour up maple. So the greens can be enjoyed usually up to mid October.
4th October 2020 and my Autumn gold is turning, slowly yes , but it's on the way. Once this cultivar starts I know Autumn is definatly here.
30th October 2020 and my Autumn gold is just turning properly now, so thought I would show the transition.
2nd November 2020 and now my Autumn gold is starting to dazzle in my garden. 30 plus years old and it always turns last. But when it does, boy oh boy it does not disappoint.
6th November 2020 and the colours of my Autumn gold are now at their best. This will last for a couple of weeks with this cultivar, so it is a good tree to have when all others have dropped their leaves.
9th November 2020 and a very damp and overcast start to the day, but my Autumn gold cheered me up no end. This one does not need bright Autumnal sunshine to glow.
11th November 2020 and no excuse for showing this one again, other than I wanted to share the glow that greeted me as daylight came this morning.
7th May 2021 and my first posting of my Autumn gold for this season. It is always one of the last, if not the last to leaf out. But others are going to be later this year.
14th May 2021 and my Autumn gold that is traditionally the last to leaf out in my garden, is now underway.
26th May 2021 and after lifting the canopy in June last year to allow more light for other maples, here is my Autumn gold today. Not quite what I like, but I will do more shaping next month and in March 22.
10th May 2022 and my first posting of my old Autumn gold. Nothing much changes after leafing out and waiting for the amazing Autumn colour on this cultivar. But sometimes you get a maple for just that.
4th May 2024 and always the last cultivar to leaf out in my garden is my Autumn gold. Getting quite old now...
