Hi guys, 1st post please be gentle ! I have just purchased a 4 year plant of the above cultivar. I bought it because Ellen is my daughter's name. Normally I like to do a bit of online researching of the plants I buy in order to endeavour to provide the best growing conditions I can. However, I am really struggling with this cultivar, all I really know is that it grows to 1 metre tall & 2-3 metres wide. Being a green dissectum I assume it will be looking for a bit of shade which I could easily provide. I would really appreciate any comments or advice from members who have grown this plant or have knowledge of it. Thanks in advance, Naepace.
Hi Naepace and welcome to the forum I would think that, in Perth in Scotland, you have no need to worry about shade Give the plant plenty of good drainage, as we are getting more and more wet weather over here, and it should be fine
good drainage like whis4ey write is a good point,if your soil is compact ,you made a little hill and planted the maple up,another advice of Sam is true in zone 8 sun isn't problem...Ellen is a cultivar by Dirk van Gelderen in nursery www.esveld.nl....
Thanks guys, living in Scotland is the reason behind "a bit of shade which I could easily provide" !! Any ideas about how early it leafs out ? hard frosts & occasionally snow are not uncommon into April & May.
if the min temperature is around under -2,-3 C° covered the maple, yes maple like every tree have reserve buds, but for one season not grow more....
Is 'Ellen' a fairly new cultivar or just unpopular ? I managed to work the search function on the site and was quite surprised/disappointed by the resulting two hits, a picture of the foliage & named in a members top 5 favourites. I am now determined to grow a wonderful specimen & raise it's profile somewhat ! I already feel I am giving it a good start, it is being sent out to me on Monday from Cornwall on the day 80 mph winds are expected to batter England's south coasts ! Cheerie, Naepace.
Ellen is in commerce in 1992 is a selection of Dissectum,(news by book "Maples for Gardens"by Timber Press),is similar to Dissectum, but remain small, have a good autum coulor, japanese maples(Jm or JM) collector use this cultivar for rock gardens.. 80mph gaspp!!!like Trieste in Italy ,around my hills mountain have snow up,for the moment in Fara Sabina rained....
