While recently attending the annual meeting of the South East Chapter American Bamboo Soc. at the Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens in Savannah GA. I was able to collect some seed from a tree labeled A. oliverianum. Van Gelderen says it is difficult to propagate from seed. Seed I collected was on the tree from 2008 flowering so I am assuming that it has gone through its period of cold stratification. I have carefully removed the samaras & just cracked the nutlet so that water will get to the embryo by soaking. All seed collected seems to have a large & viable looking embryo. They will go into an individual long tube flat when soaking is complete & then onto a heat mat set at 70 deg F.
Has anyone out there had experience with this species??? Would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance. Paul S. Portland, TN

    Paul,

Nice to see another Tennesseean on the Board! I've picked strawberries in Portland many times.

Here's some addtional info on A.o. cultivation:

Looks like you need to be careful soaking the seeds.

Good info K4, thank you. Mine has been planted for 6 years and have not seen a single samara yet.
