I`m a little confused..On my picture that was taken in a arboretum in stockholm this tree was labeled Acer Miyabii but when i look in the ubc for more pictures of it ,it shows a different tree? Under spp Miaotaiense it is a tree that is very similar to that on my picture. What is the right name for the tree on my picture? And what is the hardiness zone for that tree? I`m collecting seeds this fall,so i want the name right.

Looks OK for Acer miyabei, but I'm not familiar with subsp. miaotaiense. However, subsp. miyabei is fairly frequent in cultivation, whereas subsp. miaotaiense is extremely rare.

I'd guess probably hardiness zone 5.

If there are any Acer campestre or other closely related maples nearby, expect a high risk of hybrid seedlings . . . and if there aren't, expect a high risk of poor quality self-pollinated seed! But that's the risk you take with arboretum-collected seed ;-)

Such a characteristic as reddish new growth could vary from one seedling to the next within a species.

This taxon is closely related to Acer miyabei Maximowicz; the bark, inflorescences, flowers, and fruit are very similar. For one of us (de Jong), A. miaotaiense is a subspecies of A. miyabei.
