    Re: Acer circinatum 'Sunglow'

Do you know anything about an Acer circinatum cultivar called "Sunny Sister"? It's spring leaf color is peachy yellow and reddish. It is available in a local nursery and I'd like to know how large it would be and what the fall leaf color would be? Would the color be strongest in sun to part sun? Jamie-Redmond WA

I only got mine this year, too, but the description from Forest Farm is: Eye-catching! The golden-apricot new growth of this delightful dwarf (to only 4' in 10 years) form of a NW native makes it a treat in any small garden or bonsai collection. We have Talon Bucholz to thank. Sun to part shade.

Hope this helps. I love mine already and it's only about 2' tall.

Sunny Sister has a yellow to yellow-green leaf base and spends much of the early part of the year over toned in various shaded or oranges and rose colors. Much of the overtone takes on a rusty look of various shaded. In good exposure, these overtones will persist for much of the growing season. Evenually, if in enough to too much sun, the overtones become ore of a pleached or bleached coloration and the leaves can burn or scorch. They are relatively tender overall. A more colorful and smaller leafed selection than circinatum Sunglow, and seems to be worth a try. For us here, it can be difficult to grow cultivated forms of circinatum in open exposure as they fry pretty readily, but I have tried this one for a couple of years and it is just now starting to grow well.

The attached photo is from the other day in open full sun exposure. You can see the green underneath the overtones which will become more prominant as the season wears on . As with many maples it is more spectacular in the spring.
