Emerges with pink cream and light green and morphs into a nice variegate with lot's of white. Best suited to shade, shelter this maple from harsh conditions for best performance. Slow growing to 8 feet in 10 yrs. Spreading habit.
Re: Acer campestre Carnival An interesting feature of this cultivar are the leaves as they unfold: for 2 weeks or more they look like globes as pictured below (photos taken today) Gomero
Re: Acer campestre Carnival Here are some additional shots of this great cultivar. It was found as a chance seedling and introduced in 1989 in The Netherlands. Its variegation is very stable and can be placed in shade. To me it is the best variegated maple to lighten up a shady corner in the forest, as can be seen in my pics. Adult size is estimeted at 3 m (although mine, which is about 5 years old is already 2.5 m). Gomero
Re: Acer campestre Carnival Especially there you will have to shade it, burns even in dull summer climates if planted in sun.
my lousy picture does not do this one justice. At the risk of hyperbole this one is a must see to believe. The beauty of each leaf provides that instant gratification even at this young graft stage
Hi Gil and all, I to am enthralled by this unique maple. Shade is a requirement, but the overall effect is quite stunning. I am adding this cutie to my list for next year. Sam
Hi Sam and Ron, just FYI I grow Carnival in full Normandie sun, it is very happy and only burns a little in August. (It will be a couple of years before it has any shade). It shows much more pink than those pictured above. -E
My experience growing this cultivar for 5 years is that it shows a great deal of variability from year to year. Some years green dominates, others there is lots of pink and others, as Alex shows, almost white. It is the white variegation and white leaves that are very weak and rarely end the season in good shape, regardless of exposure. However sun exposure accelerates their demise. Branches with only white leaves also die back 90% of the time. Gomero
Thanks for sharing this information. It is a pretty tree, but I don't think it could handle the hot summers we have here in Boise. Karalyn
in my usda zone (9b) remain without more leaves fro two months (june and august)the hot wind killed the leaves in open sun,but the variegations are more beautiful
This is a very beautiful tree. I find it's variance from year to year quite fascinating. I am very interested in learning more about this species. Maybe if it is practical, I will plant one of my own.
Yes, Carnival is an interesting cultivar, but I have found that it does not ship well. Not sure if it is the darkness or the lack of air circulation, but I have removed it from my website and I only sell it locally. Maple_Lady
I have never seen such a nice specimen like the one in the picture in the link below. Carnival Gomero
i have experienced this as well. it has bounce back mostly now and i will be posting it soon. i have it in full shade for now.
Mine has been heavily cut back to about this size also. I have found that if the green parts are not removed, that whole section will revert, so careful you don't lose yours altogether Alex. I'm sure you don't need another green campestre!
I thought i was going lose mine when I first received it. I'm glad to see it have come back as nice as it has.
