Hi Everyone, Just found this forum which looks like a great place. I hope i've post this in the correct place, and im a beginner. I planted an Acer Bloodgood around 3 months ago which was 6ft tall at purchase. However, the last few weeks half of the leaves seem to have come off, and there appears to be new 'buds' where the leaves were. We had a lot of high winds shortly after it was planted and the leaves did go a little brown afterwards, so I dont know if this is linked? I'm basically wondering if this is normal or there may be a problem with it? Thanks. UPDATE: See Pictures Below
ciao Tranceril every ok for your maple, but if you send a pics is better, use pine bark around the trunk...
Japanese maple cultivars are disease susceptible. Forum participant "Mr. Shep" says some US stock comes infested with systemic pseudomonas before you even plant it, resulting in subsequent decline and failure of plantings that look OK when installed. (I have had that experience, from whatever specific cause with more than one kind - including 'Bloodgood'). Otherwise there is verticillium wilt, cankers...Vertrees/Gregory Japanese maple book from Timber Press has several pages on diseases of Japanese maples.
Hi all, Ive attached some pictures for you to have a look. So if anyone can tell me if this is normal, or what kind of condition its in i'd be greatfull. Also and tips to help it. Thanks.
R@tranceri,please cut a little and reply if the branch are green or brown, your maple have a hard shot of hot wind reply again alex
So Alex you think it has been damaged by the wind? I think the same too. Are those little buds new leaves? and would they grow this year or next? I was looking forward to it turning red in autumn.
Your tree will be fine Strong winds this year have dessimated a new planting of my own. The trees look absolutely terrible They will be fine next year, as will yours The new buds may well open this year
Cheers, thats good to know :) On a side note, anyone know how much these trees grow on average a year?
Trees planted near a wall often gets convective heat. Hot dry winds plus convective heat it is not a good combination. Doesn´t matter, what it doesn´t kill you makes you stronger.
