These cute little flowers popped up in the middle of my lawn. I want to know what they are and when I should transplant them. The pictures are not great and if noone recognizes them I will try taking better pics on a cloudy day. Thanks, Leeta
Moth Mullein or Verbascum blattaria. So called because the flower parts are reminiscent of a moth. The other interesting thing about this plant is the knobby hairs.:) Stipitate glandular, (gland on a stalk), is what one flora called it. It is a non-native, introduced species from Eurasia. See http://www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/verbascumblat.html for comparison. I have never tried to transplant them but if it is already coming up in the grass you probably shouldn't have much trouble transplanting the new growth in the late spring. Too, the seedheads contain a lot of seeds so you might try and collect a few and spread them where you want them. I have never been johnny on the spot and in hot weather the seedheads open pretty quickly, so I would probably try attaching a baggy over the flower head just after the petals drop or as soon as they begin to wilt.
