Is there a climbing vine that will grow in 6-8 inches of soil in a shady area in Vancouver? I am looking to plant it in a shallow planter box on the edge of a green roof to grow up an unsightly wall. I was thinking about an evergreen clematis, but I don't know if they will grow in such shallow soil. Your good advice is appreciated!

Clematis will do that, and so should various Passiflora if you shelter them over the winter. Other species that might do well, like ivies, are far more invasive and should be considered as last resorts only.
