I laughed at the tag that came with the masquerade pepper plants - it said 'harmful if eaten'!!!!!

    : O

The garden centers really love to mislead the public, don't they?!!! I know they mean 'harmful' in terms of the intense heat contained inside the fruits, and for children and elderly people, it is very much appreciated. However, to say they are 'harmful' implying they are poisonous, is totally inaccurate, and downright misleading. I told them so, as well.

There's people out there that may very much enjoy hot peppers, but because of this ridiculous label, they may never know that they are perfectly edible, and in fact delicious - had one last night in my pasta. Very hot.

Here's some more shots I took this morning - just because they're so pretty...

They really are something - I know, thank you.

I usually grow all my peppers from seed, but I couldn't resist buying these when I saw how stunning they were. They're like Medusa, only better. I have already began to dry some seeds for sharing.

I just got back from a nursery, OMG!!!!! I couldn't believe the amount of these ornamental peppers they had there.
    How hot are they?

I went there in search of hibiscus plants.
    And guess what ?
The place was loaded with them, all sorts and colors.
Only only one of them had a seed pod with mature seeds in it though.
Give you one guess as to who owns it now?

When are we going to see your pics too Penny?!!! You hardly ever post any - you need to buy another camera so you'll have one handy when you need it. You're such a terrific gardener that you should be splashing your pictures all over this forum, like me.

Gonna harvest me some hot peppers for dinner!

2nd shot shows my new little "Julie' mango tree! Someone sent me the pit and it germinated in three weeks. Here it is...

P.S. Woops - Julie mangoes are kind of off topic in this thread. Sorry - already had it downloaded before I realized.

Of course I know I could have deleted it, but when you wait nearly 5 minutes just to download it, I figure I may as well just show it anyway. Hate it when things go off topic though, so sorry about that. Thought I was in the pics and chat thread.

Looking forward to seeing peeks of your peppers, Zac...

Hollyberry Lady, that is a great collection youve got there. im in awe of all the selection youve got. i dont have near that many species, mainly only keeping tabasco, and some types of thai pepper for the flakes and hot sauces i make myself. ive gotten so many this year that ive started giving peppers away by the gallon at work lol.

so do you keep pepper plants alive every year or start fresh from seed each year. the pics i have are of some second year plants ive got. the thai's have done very very well this year, but the tabasco hasnt been great. its set lots of fruit, but most of them dried up before ripening. i know this spring and summer have been kinda hot, but compared to last year it shouldnt have done that much worse. the only thing thats different is the fact its 2 years old, and some 6 foot tall lol...

these are the best pics ive got of them

    What zone are you in?

the one thats almost to the roof of my house is tabasco.

the one im standing next to, im honestly not sure what it is. it came from a plate lunch at a thai restarant, so i call it a thai pepper till i figure it out. its a thin pepper with medium length, it goes from green to red, with a medium heat.

yes they are big, almost too big, since that picture was taken the thai pepper pretty much collapsed under its own weight. its still making peppers though...

im in new orleans, i beleive its zone 10, could be wrong though

You realize you can prune those suckers back, don't you, Red? Those are just gigantic. Take the shears to them and shape them the way you want them - don't be afraid.

I have peppers that I grow indoors and ones that I grow outdoors too. I don't usually bring the outdoor ones inside because of bugs, and they grow so easily from seed anyhow, so I just start new ones for outdoors each year. I have ones that stay inside all year round and produce in my sunny window sills or under my lamp systems.

Thanks for the compliement, Red - can ya tell I love hot peppers?!!!

    : O

Just a bit, huh? I am not the only one though - Penny loves them just as much and she likely has as many varieties as I do! There are many other pepper freaks out there too.

Well look, it's like this, if you would like some of my varieties - just mail me the postage first and I will send ya some that you want! I don't usually ask for postage but when it's with someone I am not trading with, I must ask for it, or it can just get too expensive when you're giving free seeds to a whole whack of people, which I do.

I hope you will prune your pepper shrub so it won't have that wild, untame look to it anymore. Pruning it will not hurt the plant in any way, so not to worry.

i planned on pruning them back when they were done, but they havent stopped producing yet. the crazy thing is that when winter killed them back they were only about a foot tall. theyve gone nuts since spring, the only reason i havent pruned it was to see how big it could get, but its just too much now...either way i think ill dig them out this time and start over.

i definately need some new varieties, i may take you up on that offer. a postage stamp is better than ebay prices either way. expect a private message soon...

I have lots of hot peppers to harvest too! Thanks to the seeds that you sent me. I would post some pics, but I am having problems getting them to download from my camera. I will get it sorted out when I have time. Frost is threatening early next week, so I am very busy harvesting my garden.
