I planted this bush last spring, or so I thought. It was a stick all year and this spring it started growing. I had originally thought it was some sort of berry but now I'm unsure and need some help identifying it! It has serrated leaves, huge thorns on the main branches and long thin thorns on the off shooting branches. Please see the attached photos for a closer look! Thanks!
Welcome alrunae. Looks like an Aralia. Possibly Aralia spinosa. https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=....,cf.osb&fp=bb221776c5e59082&biw=1280&bih=647 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aralia_spinosa or Aralia elata. https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=...source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=fQ_BT-l_htLxA-TztOMK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aralia_elata Please can someone give me tips on how to tell one from the other?
Tell us which you've chosen to do... Devil's club has attractive leaves, a nice bloom that attracts butterflies, produces fruit for the birds... ... And suckers all over the garden.
I'm thinking I may get rid of it before it matures more because I was trying to plant berry bushes in that area. I have three planted next to it and it seems like it'll get quite large and overbearing. So I think I'll nix it
