I just purchased my first Japanese maple a few weeks ago from a local nursery. They had it growing under shade cloth, so when I got it home I placed in what I though was a shaded area. Only to find that the location gets more sun then I thought, and burned some of the leaves on a few branches. I have read that you can remove the leaves and force a second set of leaves. My question is, do you remove just the leaf, or trim it back to where to the branch.

Doing it to an already stressed out tree is a bad idea, so get the tree healthier first and then consider doing it. It's normally done in early summer (i.e. not quite yet) to encourage a new crop of smaller leaves for bonsai, but not if the tree already has problems. Once it's doing better (can you move it?), then you can clip the leaf stems halfway out to the leaf (but that's not crucial... no rulers or anything!).
