A garden wonder

    My friend got it with his new house and wonders what this could be.
    I would call it a herb if not this impressive wooden base. Could not find it in my Intermountain Flora - rather not native. Some shrubby Lamiaceae?
    Any idea what this monster is?

    Look like Hyssopus officinalis, indeed. Could not find a photo with a wooden base, but wikipedia confirms:
    "Hyssop is a brightly colored shrub or subshrub that ranges from 30 to 60 centimeters in height. The stem is woody at the base, from which grow a number of straight branches."
    Interesting that Flora of NA does not have Lamiaceae published yet, at least on the web.
