Here are a few plants in my backyard. The first one is actually a shrub, the second one must be an annual, and the last one is a vine. They were all right next to each other. This is in northern Wisconsin, in a drier area, with very sandy soil.

#1 is a hickory Carya seedling; from its multiple stems, I'd guess it started a few years ago and got cut to ground level one or more times (by any of mower, weedeater, deer, etc.) and resprouted.

Was there any follow-up with this?

The vine, number 3, is likely a Smilax, perhaps Smilax tamnoides.
