Hi everyone I have been reading this forum for sometime and received many useful tips but I have a few questions. 1. I planted Yukon Gold seed potatoes May 28th and I am wondering about germination times. 2. I am wondering when I can put my tomatoes out. The days here are anywhere from 12c to 20c and nights 6c to 10c.
Tomatoes can start going out now, but if you get chill advisories you'll need to cover them with burlap overnight. Yukon Golds take about a month and a half from seed to sprout, so they should be up sometime later this month. Just be patient! How deep did you plant them, and did you chit them first?
There are no chill advisories for the next few days at least and I planted them around 5-6 inches deep and yes it did chit them
No worries. The hardest thing about potatos is the waiting game. If you browse around here in this forum (Fruit and Veggies) you'll probably run across some threads by Durgan, the veggie guru. I'm sure he's got something on potatoes, because I recall having a discussion with him on chitting techniques earlier this year. He's got a great website that documents his garden and methods from seed to fruit, and he's in Ontario, which has a similar climate to you. If I don't completely miss my point, he's actually growing Yukon Golds this year. (unlike me - I'm in the tropics closer to where potatos originally come from, and we grow the native cultivars S. tuberosum var andigena, and not the Northern-adapted S. tuberosum var tuberosum. I've got the Andean cultivars Oro Morado and Atahualpa, myself.)
Hi Cape Breton Gardener, Re your tomato question - I asked a lady down here in our end of Nova Scotia when I should put my tomatoes and peppers out, and she said it's safe after the first full moon in June; however, she pointed out that this year, the full moon is a bit later than usual, so it's probably safe to put them in NOW (yikes, I am so NOT ready). Also, another really great source for our province is Marjorie Willson who has a weekly program on CBC radio (Fridays at 1:00 p.m., I think). She has also published a great book called the 'Gardener's Almanac' which I bought several years ago at the gardens in Annapolis Royal. Anyway, Marj said that she usually waits until the apple blossoms are "done" which is great if you have apple trees, not so great if you don't! Best of luck with your crops!
Thanks for the advice. i have already planted my tomatoes about 4 days ago and they appear to be doing fine so I have my fingers crossed
