Hello, I have a 50 year old maple in my backyard. It was always an impressive large tree with vastly spanned branches. The maple is "green" but I don't know the type. Over the past 2 years it has shown signs of dying. The other trees on the property are fine. This tree has about 25% of the regular leaves on it and several branches are breaking off (not from wind storms - just breaking off). We live in Ontario in a rural area. Is there anything I can do or should I have it removed. The only reason I would remove it is that I don't want it to cause any damage to neighbouring properties. It's away from the houses but would definitely fall on one of our neighbours back yards (they have had a swing on one of the branches for years). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Climate change is thought to be causing widespread deterioration of sugar maples back there, due to them being adversely affected by warming temperatures. Maybe this is your problem, if not something more usual.
