I use a 44 gal drum with the top & bottoms cut out. It allways seems very wet inside the drum, Is this usual? I add hay every 3 or 4 days. And I use a lid also.
Perhaps you would have received a response by now if your thread title was "44 gallon drum used in composting" or had somehow mentioned composting in the thread body. As it was, I for one couldn't understand the intent of the original message.
Hi Ginger, I too wondered what that was all about. Anyway, you need some holes for air circulation and it doesn't mater where you live for that. :) Newt
As I said , I cut the top & bottom out, Is this not enough? By the way, On your post I get :) What is this??? Looks like a happy face lying down.???
Ginger, no that's not enough. You need more air circulation. Maybe this will help. http://www.howtocompost.org/cat_generalinfo.asp Yes, that was a smile for you. We don't seem to have the smileys here, so I just typed in a simple one. Newt
Absolutely LOVE Your signature. Pity it dos`nt appear on your posts? Thank you for the Link . Good Help. Taa Bloke. Try To Get That Sig. Up and Running !
g'day ginger749, guess you would have recieved a good drop of rain down the coast over yeasterday and the day before? anyway with the drum you may also have to drill a series of say 1/2" or so holes all around and down the side plus put a say 50mm lenght of poly pipe with holes in it also down the middle to get oxygen into it. probably wouldn't hurt to put it in a spot where it will be kept hot. me i got rid of composting and worm farms too much like extra work, that all happens in my gardens now. len http://www.gardenlen.com/
Ginger, you are so very welcome! I've just spent the last two hours trying to figure out the name of the tree you have posted with the beautiful bark. I've seen a couple of pictures of it on the internet, but they didn't have the name! Btw, my signature doesn't show when I do the 'Quick Reply', but it does when I do the longer version. I don't know why that is. It's true too. It actually happened to me. I was out weeding the garden and these 'weeds' were just coming out of the ground so easy. Then I found part of a plant label and thought I'd better check on the computer to see what this was. I could only see the words 'Giant Bl' on the label. I got an awful feeling I might be pulling out my Giant Blue Lobelia that a dearly departed friend had given me a couple of years before. I hadn't been here to see it bloom the previous year and had forgotten about it. When I looked it up, sure enough it was the Giant Blue Lobelia!! At least there was some left! I have a son that lives in South America so I check several times a day to see if he sent me any e-mail. Since I was at the computer I decided to check my mail. He had sent me a bunch of quotes and this one was in it. So I adopted it for myself. It just seemed to fit so very well. Newt
Dead right you are. Moving right allong. I will Drill holes in 200 lit drum. As you said. I also have a 65 mm pipe I will drill full of holes. Down the guts of Drum. I`ll Keep YOU posted. Taa. Mate.
i found the best drill bit was one of those flat chisel type bits used for wood drilling, twist drills just don't do as neat a hole. yeh i'm still trying to find out where i can add a signature line. len
I had the same trouble 5 days ago. You have to be a member for 3 or 4 days. Then you can make a signature. Hope that helps. Thanks for your advice about the drill bit.
Daniel, thank you for the info. I never realized that after all these posts. I'm editing my post because I see my signature. Huh? Newt
