I just picked up 3 unlabeled plants from Home Depot. Because they were sold at Home Depot, I'm hoping they will be easy to identify. Please help! I want to take good care of them.
first is a croton; second is a draceana (frangans - janet craig compacta) and the third one is likely a drac as well probably marginata.
I think its fun that people buy plants at a lumber and building supply megastore for cut rate prices then have to research the internet to figure out what the plants are. :) not pointed at any person in particular of course. I am trying to think of a quippy metaphor like ' would you buy an unidentified animal at an office supply warehouse then use the internet to figure out what it is and how to take care of it?" again, :)
hey man, home depot, walmart, ikea, and even sobeys RULE for buying plants. lol, like 90% of my collection comes from these unlikely places. i particularly LOVE clearance sections, and the sobeys in Ontario are currently selling "tropical foliage" in 2" pots for $2.49. these plants have all terribly outgrown their pots, but it's an awesome way to pick up many, many species of croton, dracaena, maranta, and even a few bromeliads. SWEET. lol. besides, identification is half the fun. think of it more as hitting Winners rather than Banana Republic, haha.
if price is the only limiting factor then it sounds like a good way to go. Personally I wont shop in Walmart or other mega discount retailers. I like to go to the local garden center and get advice etc from someone that knows their stuff, as long as the price is reasonable its good by me. Some places charge exorbitant prices, I avoid them like I avoid the mega discounters.
