22 June 2018 Garlic Posted on June 22, 2018 by Durgan 22 June 2018 Garlic 22 June 2018 Garlic Scapes are starting to form. I do not cut them off, since I do not enjoy eating them, and have found leaving them on makes the cloves lightly larger. I also allow the bulb to remain in the ground until the sheath starts to burst. This has absolutely no effect on limiting storage time and the cloves get much larger. This means i do not harvest until about six weeks beyond the normal harvest time of about mid July in my Zone 5. All my garlic is now grown from bulbils. Usually around 100 bulbs are grown.
