Went mushroom and lichen hunting yesterday and found a few new photos. These two were on a "nurse log" along with many other types. One is like a red slime and the other looks a little like coal or puffball fungi but they were growing together. Can they be ID'd, please?
Hmmm... the puffball looking critters could be spore cases of Lycogala or similar, and the red goop its motile form.
Definately 'Wolf's Milk' slime mold...as Frog said...the 'motile' stuff is actually the gooey spore before it's BECOME spore...it's just...er...traveling in other ways. Does that make sense? lol.....these start out as a pink ball...if you squish them they'll ooze out the bright pink 'gool'....when they've matured to the stage that the brown balls are....they're ready to spore out. You can pop THESE and a powdery substance, the spore...comes out.
