Re: magnolia galaxy and prunus cascade snow

Oops, we bought one of these without really researching magnolias, and didn't realize how much variation there was in form between different types. We were told when we bought this that we could keep it pruned to the shape we wanted, but it looks like this really wants to be a cone shape. Our model magnolia form, that we would like for this spot in our yard, is somewhat more of a mushroom shape. We used to rent a house that had one that had been carefully pruned and maintained over the years to have a very nice web of branches, almost like a Japanese maple, but of course much larger.

Can this Magnolia be pruned to a shorter, more shrub or umbrella like form? Or will we just be fighting it's nature, and be better off with a different magnolia? We really like the purple blossoms that the Galaxy gets in acid soil.

    Thanks,

    Allen

Selected for street tree use. Maybe you should try another kind.

Any idea where I could get a visual reference for the various Magnolia forms available? I would love to be able to compare/contrast the natural shapes, and then cross-reference for zone and tepal color.
