    Hi!

Our greengage plum was cut off just above the ground in a recent storm. The stump is sending up lots of healthy shoots. Is it possible to select one and allow it to grow? Or would it be better to attempt a graft, if so onto what?

I had a greengage for many years.
What a deliciously different flavour a greengage has. They are so sweet, and almost between a really ripe gooseberry and a plum. I wonder of course if your tree was grafted. If so, the sprouts will only be from the rooting stock and will not give you greengages. But if it was not grafted, you may be in luck. In any case the next crop would be years away. It is probably better to start afresh, although getting rid of a stump is a great problem for most gardeners. I found this site which might interest you. Greengage jam with biscuits( English scones) used to bew a specialty of one of the favourite eateries in Vancouver, the White Spot.
