Juglans regia er very easy to germinate, they do not need stratification. I have tryed with and without stratification and get about 60% sprouting on both. Some use giberellic acid and get better sprouting %.Early in the spring I put all the nuts in a bucket with hole in the buttom, water once or twice a day and pick out the nuts who are sprouting. Juglans nigra are harder to germinate, often not before second year. But if the nut are stratified the hole winter in sand they often sprout very good the first spring. This year I got nearly 100% germination of black walnuts I got from Michigan last autumn.
