Help! I have no idea what this shrub is. It looks like something simple that I should know, but I can't figure it out. I attached a picture. Does anyone know what this is?
    Thanks!

    Perhaps Phlomis, with spent blooms.

Looks like Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) to me. Invasive member of mint family, formerly used to make the (awful tasting) sore throat candy.

I agree with the phlomis. The seed heads look exactly right. What colour is the flower? Leonurus also has the same type of seed head.

I am going to stick with Marrubium showing old flower heads (leaves at flower bases mostly unapparent). I see it like this all the time. It may depend on where you are geographically, (horehound is common in So. CA, where I live) and I don't know how invasive Phlomis is (your plant looks like a "volunteer" weedy plant rather than an escaped domestic). I can see some younger basal leaves near ground level (lower left in photo) that look right for Horehound. But I would be gleefully proven wrong; please post a reply stating what you think this plant turns out to be if you can get it identified! Thanks!

    Leaves say "horehound."
