I have several vine maples, native to parts of BC - some are fine and others have all the holes in leaves I also photographed a young native dogwood and the rootstock of an ornamental flower cherry I don’t see an insect or any cobwebs or sticky residue what’s eating the fresh young leaves? photos attached
Thank you @Ron B I notice small white foam spots on adjacent shrubs of similar species as described (photo) above the foam is maybe just slightly larger than a Q-Tip
@Margot - i just took these photos - in my coast garden near the ocean see the insects in the foam? again the foam is approx size of q-tip it’s shown on the root stock of a neighbour ornamental flower cherry (the root stock sprouts / shoots spreads easily 30 feet and on my young vine maples ;acer circinatum)
@Margot The bugs in the spittle look like Aphrophora sp (permutata?) the Douglas Fir Spittlebug. There may be other insects chewing on your leaves as well. 269-aphrophora-sp-douglas-fir-spittlebug browse_photos
