Here is a thriving Bihou (their spelling) in the New Hanover County Arboretum in Wilmington NC, an environment I would expect to be hostile to Japanese maples. The bark is an outstanding feature, even in the summer.

Hi @kines that is possibly the best Bi hoo I've seen in years. Goes to show that you can get a good one.

Three years, that's positively old age for Bi hoo lol.
It looks wonderful amongst the other colours though Karl. Well done you.

I hope it stays happy where it is. I may have to check the roots next spring. All the growth from atop that wooden fence just dies back eventually. it really needs shelter

Fingers crossed it will be fine Karl, but die back is just a common problem with Bi hoo, so placement isn't what has caused yours to do so.

I bought mine in 2015, it's always been potted, and is still alive !
This year, the leaves got brown spots, like 'Orange Dream', but no real die-back, only a few twigs like it is usual on maples.
