Yes magnificent..from a distance the colour looked right for SK..up close you could see the red/pink upper branches..there’s a big one in Westernbirt..goes to show how long these cultivars have been knocking around over the world!
There are lots of sycamore trees and Norway maples around, as well as field maples. They're all still green. But this Acer triflorum is beginning to get some colour at the top - not much, it's shaded by a big Atlas cedar : I saw this tree that at first took for, maybe a silver maple of some kind, but on closer look, it was a Liquidambar. There's a big (green) Sycamore behind : This "sweetgum" must be in a bad location for there are many others around that are just putting some red : The rain is here this week. But the Loire has never been so low at this time of the year as far as I can remember. I have never seen sandbanks before where I took this photo, even in the heart of summer :
Visited Japanese garden in Tallinn today. Picked some seeds from this: I wonder, what cultivar that might be? And is it the same cultivar as this one:
Hard to tell, but the leaves look more like shirasawanum, or amoenum than palmatum. It looks like a very nice spot, I'd like to visit some day...
Actually, both of them : the leaves look "rounded" with the leaflets not deep to the stem, but it's hard to say. I think the soil, exposure, etc. plays an important part in what a maple looks like, especially when they're quite young like these ones. The buds would be a good indication of whether it's amoenum or shirasawanum (or japonicum, or else).
I have a tiny copy of the purple leaved maple on the upper left corner of the first photo. This one for sure is palmatum. The other maples may be amoenums or japonicums. All shirasawanums in that garden are too different from these, shirasawanums have more robust leaves. Maples on these photos have soft leaves, dark green in summer. Shirasawanums here have yellowish tone on their leaves all the summer.
Yes, it's very difficult to idntify maples from photos, especially when tghey grow in a totally different environment. They're nice maples, that's what matters ;-)
Thank you all for feedback! It looks very much as circinatum, The fruits are exactly like Acer circinatum - Wikipedia
Not too much to show atm and after the drought we had and is officially 'still' continuing, I'm not sure that I will have much colour this year. But here are three that are showing some promise this morning, that have not defoliated.. Aureum. Amagi shigure Crimson Queen
Acer triflorum again, with the trunk and green leaves of its cousin Acer griseum on the right : Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala. I think it's the first year I've seen that red on the leaves, they're usually more in yellow/orange tones :
A couple of pictures of my Sanko Kaku which really caught my eye this morning! I always sort of forget it during the year despite walking past it constantly, then some autumn it really lights up!
How on earth do you keep your hostas in that condition!? I tried to grow some last year and even with pellets I had to give up... then this year I couldn't resist again so got some more and again they've been ravaged by slugs and snails. A friend put me onto a mulch called 'Strulch' which is sort of laced or embedded with iron and other minerals and supposedly works really well to keep slugs and snails away. I've bought a few bags now so I'm going to actually try and put all the hostas in the ground with strulch around them next year.
Excellent question! I don't even try them any more. Back from a few days vinous break, catching up with the forum, everyone's trees are looking great. Here are a few, from before and after our very long weekend. Sango kaku just starting: And also Aconitifolium Paldiski, note the difference between west and east sides in the 2nd and 3rd picture A view across the "new" side of the aceretum, starting to show color The Painted Maple again, with more paint than the last time Bi hoo More color on A. sikkimense, and a new Cornus amomum Japanese Sunrise More views of the Painted Maple The same japonicum selection as I posted previously, but more advanced
I mulch regularly from Spring with crushed eggshells. It has always worked for me. Give it a try in 2023.
Adore that Japanese sunrise! Makes me very pleased I picked one up this year and got it in the ground. Should contrast nicely next to the Inaba Shidare all through the year! Mine mostly dropped leaves before really changing to autumn colours, I think it got stressed by the summer then being planted out.
That should be a fantastic combination. I was surprised how well JS did this year, as it's in a quite difficult spot soil-wise. A little dwarf next to it defoliated completely, and is unfortunately pushing out some leaves now, but JS made it through with no water.
Just recieved two maples today, one a sugar maple and another a silver maple. They had quite a bit of exercise today..
