Red Pygmy vs. Pung Kil

Hello everyone,
at the beginning of the season I received a Red Pygmy as a gift, today in a garden center I saw a Pung Kil, I bought it without hesitation because both bark and leaves are more darker. I kindly wanted to ask you, ..to have darker leaves is it better to place it in full sun or partial shade?

For better reds, then more sun rather than less. But as for full sun, it does depend on the position and your location. Even the hardiest of reds will burn if the environment you live in is too hot.

I will try growing it in full sun for a couple of years to see how it performs, this year we have had a lot of heatwaves, ..and the future will not be better

 

Your welcome, but I think one Summer season in full sun will give you a very good idea of how it will go.

:) Why not, I like all the Linearilobum, ..the first of my wishlist is Fukinagashi, it has a nice dark bark, but here it is impossible to find

Oh, yes, and thanks for the phrase, it sounds like poetry, "beautiful" tastes very mild, and the alliterations and rhythm in "chromatic contrast" sound...
Well, a very nice image, in all senses of the words as we say here ;-)

 

I find it difficult to get good photos of strapleaf JM’s..I have a Koto no ito, Ekan, Kinshi - and some terrible photos of all of them!

 

I know the feeling... ;0)

I've got a pung kil I had located where it got sun from midday onwards and it fairly quickly started to get scorching on the leaf ends until it looked pretty unhappy. I'm actually moving it into an 'open shade' area where it wont get any direct sun. I'm not too worried about it going a little greener, so long as it holds enough darkness to contrast with the autumn moon and butterfly it'll be growing alongside.

 

No, I had a vague idea to try it with Acer pentaphyllum, but I changed my mind.

 

Thanks for the info, yesterday I planted it where it receives sun from 1pm onwards, will probably burn mine too in summer, ..better move it to a more sheltered location

 

Personally, I’d keep it in a pot and gradually expose it more and more over several seasons..but I am a pot man lol This is how my peaches and cream will take full sun

Now I have three options, ..more than a Shakespearean dilemma :)

 

Yes mine was in a pot and I've only had it a couple of years, so it would definitely acclimatise to more sun eventually in the ground.
Part of the reason is I'm moving to where I currently have a Twombly's Red Sentinel, and I know that can take way more sun so I'm moving it to a full sunny spot. I need a red/dark red to take it's place so the Pung Kil is going in instead!
