Derek, what sort of protection should we give these small maples in that kind of weather event? Our greenhouse isn't heated, but might it have helped I wonder?

I probably should have reached out to the supplier nursery in April when I received them. Its a popular mail order nursery and I think it’s too late now, 2 months later.

The Japanese Princess and Sunny had arrived from a different nursery in the Autumn. They had been dormant all winter and both leafed out earlier than the other maples. I tried covering them with cloth sheets when it snowed, but it wasn’t enough.

Hi Keith, a greenhouse would protect them. It does not have to be heated, just enough to protect delicate new shoots as they form into leaves. But I agree, the warmth then a frost is a real killer for young cultivars that leaf out early. Rogue frosts that we had in 2021 are the worst. You just can't prepare for these.
Acer griseum is a clever tree, holds off leafing out until after the frosts have finished. So perhaps this is the way forward for areas like yours and @Worldly_Wrangler

I can confirm, I have two Acer griseum and they are doing great. Very late to leaf out.
‘Mikado’, ‘Purple Thunder’ and ‘Emmett’s Pumpkin’ also leafed out much later than all of my other maples.

I sent a letter to the nursery where I purchased ‘Yellow Cascade’ and ‘Wako Nishiki’ to see if I can get a replacement or refund. I don’t blame them if they say no. I should have brought it to their attention immediately.

Since this is the cheering up thread, here is the view from my bench in my garden. I love staring at this ‘Esk Sunset’.

How about a bit of Autumn Moon to brighten up what's looking to be a wet weekend, unfortunately.

It's just before 6 am here on a beautiful Saturday morning, and what am I greeted with? A dozen wonderful images of my favourite small maples! Thank you so much for getting my day off to such a terrific start!

Just one for today. I set up my water feature yesterday and paired it with some of my smaller maples. Now whenever the sun comes out the whole garden is filled with the sound of trickling water. Paradise!

Oof, no kidding, especially in London. I'm really not a fan of this city, but inside my garden fence it's a whole other world, somewhere much nicer.

Hello everyone its been like 2 months since i last posted lol. I am in india until the end of this month (summer holidays)

During a trek in the himalayan mountains, at 7000-8000 ft, I suddenly found wild specimens of acer cappadocicum. They were pretty rare but increased in frequency until about 8000 feet. Of course i took loads of photos!

This is the Japanese sunrise and Nicholsonii I picked up last week.

I'm not sure if the Japanese sunrise is meant to have the yellow mottling sort of effect over the green? From other pictures I've seen they're just all green during summer, I like it but I'm not sure if it's showing some sort of stress? It was like this when I bought it.

@D97x7 was right about what a pretty little thing Koko is... of course I had to fill my Hippopottering basket to get the most out of the shipping cost, so Sensu and Nakkai came home too(!)

I was struck by the colours of my Summer Gold in this heatwave we're 'enjoying', then decided to take some pictures of the trees I photograph less frequently, just for fun.

Crimson Queen, Giant Moon, Miwa, Grandma Ghost:

What an odd time of year for my maples to be flowering -- and such strange-shaped blossoms! (haha)
