I vividly remember not long after I'd got my first 3 or 4 maples. I'd had a nap after work and left the back door open, only to come outside and found my 6 month old puppy had dug 2 of them up and flung them round the garden. By some miracle they survived and I still have them!
I see the leaves on this summer's gold are fairly large like mine. Last couple of years the leaves on mine were all fairly mid-to-small sized, but since I've lifted it and moved it into more sunlight, this spring it's leafed out with real big ones. AFAIK it's a shirasawanum hybrid cultivar? Also I thought Jordan had quite big leaves, but mine has flushed with all pretty small leaves! The Jordan is new to me though - I bought it in the middle of winter, but loving the fresh colour and super fine red etching around the margin.

May Day 2022, and I still have quite a few that are slow to leaf out, but they are moving. Only going to be 12°c max here today, so not exactly tropical. Morning D, looks like it's sunny down south, pouring down here but it's most welcome. Here's a quick snap of Olivia this morning.
My new one, 'Summergold', and Acer laevigatum in the same corner, almost 100% in the shade for the moment : The 'Orange Dream' trained as bonsai has very pale leaves this year, but they seem very healthy. Seen from above : Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' looks just what it should look like in late afternoon : Different angles, the second one shows what my only A. palmatum in the ground is like, the 1st one shows what is mainly in the shade : Ipheion. It's called "ail des incas" in French. Most of the bulbs show blue flowers, a few white ones, but it's the second year I've bought some and the pink ones in my pots are very rare :

Brought a couple more flower plants to my Mum today, my son and his dog "Masto" and I had a "cassoulet" with her, and raspberry cakes as dessert. When we left the little 7-yr-old Ukrainian girl at th end of the corridor smiled and said "Hello", and we said "Hello". What can we do to preserve the innocence of children, the fraternity between the adults ?... Growing maples in our microcosm, without wondering about the rest of the world outside, probably. Well, as long as I'm still alive, what do I care anyway now? I've fought, but I failed to make this world a better world.

Today's was quite wet, which was good the trees since it hadn't rain for quite a while! It's the first year in quite a long time that I've seen so many butterflies here. Good... Many other insects too, wild bees, bumblebees, etc. It means my garden is a safe place. Cool...
Hey folks, I have a Moonfire which seems to be in some distress. It only has leaves at the bottom of the tree and the top section seems to be dead. Any suggestions what to do to keep it alive?
I’m sure the others here will have a proper care plan for your tree - everyone here has helped me save a few. Im just Sharing my experience when I had a tree that I thought was dead. What I’ve been told by an arborist when I had a very large different type of tree that was dead on top is that The roots are typically sick and depending on the damage to the top it could die. He saw signs of life where I could not and it did come back to life in about 2 years. The tree was 45’ tall I wanted it torn down if there was any chance it was dead and could fall in high winds. But he wouldn’t approve the removal until he saw more evidence of complete death of the tree. So what might look dead might just be suffering for a couple seasons. Anything planted near that tree that might not agree with it or anything happening with the soil that could affect the roots?
Good morning J, that is a very unhappy Moonfire. I agree with Lisa in that the problem is roots. But I feel you need to do some surgery pretty quickly as the die back will increase more and more. Looking at your photos there is a lot of black that needs to be removed down to healthy wood ASAP. Yes you will have only a small Moonfire, but it will give it a chance. I would also apply Bordeaux paste to the open wounds. Now I normally don't apply this until Autumn, but in this case I feel it needs some help now. Also the ground around the base looks compacted somewhat. If this is the case the roots will be struggling for oxygen and water, hence be in stress. Stress will weaken your tree and allow infection/ disease. I would be looking at loosening the soil carefully and making sure the roots are not damaged in the process. Then it's a waiting game.
