My mom is definitely where my love of gardening came from! We actually got into Japanese Maples at the same time during the middle of the pandemic, we love to cruise nurseries together and we both love Mikawas now. :)

My friend, Riley Stark who is the urban forester for the city of Olympia Washington gave me a Bloodgood for my house warming gift, just brought it over and planted it in my front yard himself! Thats what started it all back in October 2019.

I am not completely sure but this is how I got it 10 years ago, so I am guessing 15+ years now.

4th April 2022 and the lime greens and pinks on my Mikawa yatsubusa this morning made me very happy indeed. So I thought I would share the joy.

My Mikawa Yatsubusa looked so scabby all last year I wasn't really keen on taking pictures of it. That fresh green on the spring leaves makes it look like a whole other tree - we'll see how it gets on later in the year, but right now I'm enjoying it a lot:

24th April 2022 and I waited a little longer since my last posting to show my Mikawa yatsubusa with the leaves fully open. They are looking quite lush now.

My Mikawa is holding up surprisingly well and hasn't fallen back into the scabby state it was in for most of last year (touch wood!). Making the most of it while it looks good!

Starting to lose a bit of that fresh spring prettiness, but still doing rather well:

I know what you mean Xi, but with June rain, what's not to like about this cultivar at any time of the year.

These are a couple different mikawa's I have. One in the ground and one in a nursery pot. My wife and I are in the process of buying 3 acres and I plan digging up all my maples and take them with me. I am going to anchor my driveway entrance the both of them. One on each side set back some to keep my sight lines open. Probably behind cedrus deodara prostrate beauty and a couple of other plants. I can't wait!

How wonderful, I hope you can post photos of your maples in the 3 acres when you get set up.

Wondering about this "Mikawa" at my aunt's house... I'm almost suspecting it's a seedling and not truly a Mikawa or her soil is just super hot.

She planted it Spring 2022 and it's just growing a like a weed! Really long whip growth on it, I pruned it hard this spring and was shocked to see how much it grew this season when I came back a few weeks ago. My Mikawa barely grew this year maybe 2", my dad's probably the same 2".

This thing is putting on well over 12" of growth all over. What do y'all think?!

What an amazing Mikawa yatsubusa Connor, and IMO it is a Mikawa yatsubusa. Maybe a seedling, but only way to tell is to look for a graft point at the base of the main trunk. Seedlings can and often are very strong and rampant when they survive, but more often they die in first three years as not so strong on their own roots. So do a little bit more investigation and see if it is a seedling.
