All of mine are back inside for the next two nights D, so I thought I'd take a few snaps in front of the newly painted door.

Well it works for now but when they get bigger they'll just have to fend for themselves.

That is the problem, they do grow...... But you are giving them such a good start in life, they will reward you for many years to come, however big.

It's hard to take pictures when the wind is blowing, 35 to 70 km/hr, especially when you want to take close-ups...

'Como', 'Purple Ghost', and 'Gwen's Rose Delight' (='Shirazz') just beginning to leaf out :

    'Orange Dream' "bonsai" :

... and just for a laugh, 'Blue Orange', Tintin's favourite :

our "bonfire" at its most beautiful appearance. The bright peach / yellow leaf only last 6 - 10 days then turns to a verigated peach / green tone.
In all our years of grafting this specimen was the most difficult to graft. I doubt we sold more then 20 -25 of these over a 17 year time frame. This tree is in the 40 year age group now and is the original mother tree.

My chalk maple (acer saccharum subsp. leucoderme ) arrived! terrible packing, the tree suffocated, and the new spring growth is drooping. do you guys think they can perk up and grow again? the tree is out of direct sunlight in a north facing spot in the garden. does it need sunlight to recover? i repotted it as well, and watered heavily.

Here are the photos: (theres a lot, but please look) in order left to right)

probably the only chalk maple in all of California, so thats cool! this is a subspecies of the sugar maple, acer saccharum

its been 2 hours since repotting the chalk maple, and things have gotten worse. the leaves are drying out fast and are turning brown. they are no longer soft and i know why. The heat wave in california that lasted from tuesday and will end tommorow is the culprit. when i was repotting 2 hours ago , the ambient temperature outside was 90 F ! the humidity, is extremely low, 7%, its also pretty windy, and all these conditions are sapping out any moisture in these leaves. next week, it will cool down significantly to BELOW average with much higher humidity. these swings in temperatures are affecting my body as well. severe allergy symptoms...

will this tree survive? thankfully this is the last day of the heat wave.

Please help me as to how to revive this tree :(

When I get a tree from an online provider, I always take photos now : I had a bad experience with a "famous specialist". I got three trees with black spots on the bark, I could only save one, and it was a real hassle to try and get a refund for the other ones -which I didn't get, he only sent me one only after I pestered him on a bonsai forum.

Since then, I take photos of every tree I get online.

I have some trees from lesser known nurseries, and they're serious people.

    Wow, 32.222°C ! Holy ice-pick !

Keep it in the shade and don't over-water it, it should survive.

that combined with the extremely low humidity is drying the tree out fast

Well, I'm afraid Californ-i-a is probably not the best place to grow most species of maples. You're young : move up north ! ;°)

That being said, a new member from Austin, Tx, is showing us very nice trees...

hopefully :( this climate is become more unforgiving to temperate species like maples. the thing is its fun trying to grow trees in areas where they have some trouble growing in. Also why i want to try growing tropical trees here as well. we are becoming more and more like north africa and less like spain or italy.. drier hotter hotter

I agree it is fun to try new trees, but I also believe in as many native trees as possible. It is getting harder 'everywhere' to grow maples as the climate is changing. But good for you for trying.

Nothing last night, to my surprise - I feel like we were lucky there! Hope the weather is being kind down your way too! :)

Blue Moon's an interesting one: I got it right at the tail end of last year when it had these huge, beautiful red-yellow leaves that fell within a few days, but really made me excited for what it has to show this year. Here are last year's autumn colours right when I got it out of the box:

    Thank you!
Actually, "mozzafiato" is always singular, it's an "invariable" word. I think it's because "fiato", meaning a "person's breath", is always singular, and it wouldn't make sense to make it plural in a compound word. But, "fiato" also means "wood instrument", and in that case the plural word "fiati" can be used ;)
