South Cambie

Ama-no-gawa goes where no cherry dares to go—four trees in a trench next to their building on the south side of King Edward (west side of Ash). Finishing off with a flourish at April 20, 2021.

 

And I only have ONE, perhaps there is room for another, lol.

 

On the west side of Tupper, north of W. 24th, the Star Cherry offers shelter from the rain at March 26, 2022.

 

On the grounds of the BC Women's and Children's Hospital, just outside the passageway between Brock Fahrni unit and Shaughnessy wing, there is a magnificent Shirotae, and a small one beside it.

 

Wouldn't that be in the Riley Park neighbourhood? South Cambie seems to be west of Cambie.

 

Tupper Street is one block west of Cambie Street, thus just sneaking in past the dividing line (Cambie) between South Cambie and Riley Park.
So it is legitimately, if sneakily, in South Cambie neighbourhood.

 

Oh - sorry - I thought you meant Tupper school!

 

‘Choshu-hizakura’ is in full bloom now, on 27th east of Ash.
Fairy tale-like setting.

 

On my way home from VD on Easter Sunday and I saw this beautiful Easter Egg Site......The Ukon Cherries at 37th and Baillie all had Easter Eggs hanging from them!

 

Again on the grounds of the BC Children's and Women's Hospital, outside the passageway from Women's Hospital to Shaughnessy Wing, there are two 'Shirofugen' in full bloom and a large 'Kanzan' starting to fade:


Also, in the Safeway parking lot at King Edward and Oak Street (SE corner), there is a small, but lovely 'Shirofugen':

 

The Star Cherry tree on the west side of Tupper, north of W.24th is in full bloom (and dropping blossoms in the rain) at April 8, 2023.



The last photo shows not only the star shape of the flowers, but also their inrolling at the petal tips, "forming apparent soft points," an identifying feature of 'Stellata.' 2014 Ornamental Cherries of Vancouver, p. 29.

Just around the corner on the south side of W. 24th is an 'Akebono', that looks pretty good, even defiant, dripping as it is with Vancouver rain.

 

The 'Choshu-hizakura' on the north side of W. 27th, east of Ash, is approaching full bloom at April 24, 2023.



Still looks very good.

 

Gorgeous tree in perfect setting.

 

The Jo-nioi at Heather and West 33rd is pruned and looks a bit awkward now. Still fragrant and blooming though.

 

Two 'Shirofugen', one on each end of the Safeway mall parking lot at King Edward and Oak Street - one previously posted. Photos taken from the bus.

 

On the old RCMP headquarters at (SW) W. 33rd and Heather, both 'Jo-nioi' and 'Takasago' are in full bloom at April 4, 2024.

A panoramic view of the mountains is a little marred by the pitiful view of the 'Takasago' tree. One must compensate by concentrating on its hidden sepal beauty.



The 'Jo-nioi' is also in pretty rough, aging shape, but look what it's doing! A whole bouquet of new branches has sprung up from a new shoot. Lovely, fragrant blooms, at a month earlier than last year.

 

The four trees of 'Ama-no-gawa' on the west side of Ash, south of King Edward, are in full bloom at April 4, 2024.

 

The 'Ukon' trees along the east side of Baillie, from W. 37 to W. 39th, are in full bloom at April 4, 2024.

 

The trip along W. 39th, from Ash to Willow is pretty eventful. All of these trees have flowers now:
Ash - 'Takasago'
Heather - Avium 'Plena'
Baillie - 'Ukon'
Willow - 'Akebono' (well, some trees have more flowers still than others)
39th - 'Kanzan'

The 'Ukon' that Anne posted seemed to be even fuller bloom on April 7.


Avium 'Plena' on Heather are starting to open but have enough flowers to notice.


Young 'Akebono' on Willow have grown enough to be impressive. There are not many flowers remaining.


I stopped by the 'Choshu-hizakura' on 27th between Cambie and Ash. It's not a perfect specimen, but it's still beautiful.
