British Columbia: Advanced Notification - PNWP&EPS Plant Sale & Seed Swap

After 2 years of Covid its back!

Barring any additional provincial health emergencies the Pacific Northwest Palm & Exotic Plant Society (PNWP&EPS) will be holding their Annual Plant Sale on Saturday May 21st.

I know a lot of people got into gardening as a hobby over the past two years and with the Van Dusen Plant Sale once again cancelled this should be a much anticipated event. The sale will be held outside with whatever Covid protocols are required at that time.

We will also be incorporating our yearly Seed Swap * into the Plant Sale. So if you are looking to add a little "tropical flair" to your garden this would be a great day to come on by to browse, swap or chat with knowledgeable members on site.

Date of Sale: Saturday May 21st, 2022
Time of Sale: 9:00AM - 3:00PM
Location of Sale: 3380 No. 6 Rd, Richmond, in the parking lot of Phoenix Perennials & Specialty Plant

Be sure to mark your calendars!

And to peak your interest, here is a small sampling of some of the plants that will be available:

1. Dragon's claw arum - Dracunculus vulgaris - 1 year old bulbs
2. Southern bush honeysuckle 'Cool Splash' - Diervilla sessilifolia - a hardy shrub 1 - 1.5 m in height
3. Woolly Dutchman's pipevine - Aristolochia tomentosa - this hardy vine can reach 10 m in length
4. Variegated porcelain vine - Ampelopsis brevipedunculata 'Elegans' - stunning variegated plants with iridescent blue berries
5. Variegated American aloe - Agave americana 'Marginata' - parent plant was over 1 m tall
6. "Mystery" rose of Sharon - Hibiscus syriacus - these are 2-3 year old saplings that are a cross between 'Red Heart' and 'Blue Satin' with the majority producing pink blossoms (but no guarantee on color)

Additional Plants Available:

1. Waggie palms - Trachycarpus wagnerianus
2. Assorted citrus, both hardy and tender varieties; including the cold hardy Yuzu lemon (Citrus junos) and bitter orange (Poncirus trifoliata)
3. Assorted pawpaws (Asimina triloba) that will produce fruits weighing up to 1/2kg.
4. 'Golden Prolific' dwarf nectarine - these 1.2 m trees can produce up to 20kg of fruit.
5. Assorted canna lilies

There will also be an assortment of highly unusual palm seedlings available, including California fan, Cretan date, Mexican fan and Mazari.

More Oddities Added:

1. Magnolia vine 'Eastern Prince' (schisandra chinensis) - this self fertile variety produces edible fruit
2. Mouse plant - arisarum proboscideum
3. Mock strawberry 'Harlequin' (duchesnea indica) - variegated leaves and yellow flowers
4. Litchi tomato seedlings (solanum sisymbrifolium) - a tender perennial with fruits that are both sweet and tart
5. Spring wheat (triticum aestivum 'Utrecht Blue') - a heritage variety producing stunning blue heads on golden stalks in the Fall.

April 22nd Update
We've just been informed there will be a grower on site with some of the most Exotic Plants yet!
He's keeping it a surprise but promised to bring an assortment "interesting and fun" plants, both hardy and tender.
No guarantee on what is coming but it should be interesting!


Not to mention an assortment of interesting mini ornamental gourd seedlings available (annuals)

* The Seed Swap will allow you to swap your extra seed packages for some unusual seeds provided by Society members. And if you have nothing to swap you will still be able to purchase seeds.
